Running in

Engine

Brake pads

New brake pads have to bed down before they can achieve their optimum friction levels. You can compensate for this initial reduction in braking efficiency by exerting greater pressure on the levers.

WARNING New brake pads

Longer stopping distance, risk of accident

Tyres

New tyres have a smooth surface.

This must be roughened by riding in a restrained manner at various heel angles until the tyres are run in. This running in procedure is essential if the tyres are to achieve maximum grip.

WARNING New tyres losing grip on wet roads and at extreme bank angles

Risk of accident

Shifting gear

- with shift assistant Pro OE

Shift assistant Pro

Requirement

The shift assistant assists up-shifts and downshifts without the rider having to pull the clutch or close the throttle. This is not an automatic-shift system. The rider is the most important part of the system and decides when to shift gears.

NOTICE See the section entitled "Engineering details" for more information on the Pro shift assistant.

NOTICE Whenever the Pro shift assistant shifts down, cruise control is automatically disengaged for safety reasons.

 BMW R 1250 RT - Owner's Manual > Brakes

How can stopping distance be minimised? Each time the brakes are applied, a load distribution shift takes place with the load shifting forward from the rear to the front wheel. The sharper the motorcycle decelerates, the more load is shifted to the front wheel. The higher the wheel load, the more braking force can be transmitted without the wheel locking.
